Prepping for Wheelchair Moab Trip

Last year around this time, I mentioned how the COVID Pandemic halted the spring Disneyland vacation we had planned.  What a drag it was that our lifestyles had to change with all the social distancing and the imposed limitations around others.  No doubt 2020 will go down as a unique year as we all did what we could to stay safe and COVID-free.

We hoped the pandemic would lift so we could do Disneyland this month, but it has not.  Still, we wanted get our family together – somewhere.

Leslie, Jamie and I have all been vaccinated against COVID as well as our daughters and their spouses, so we decided to do a trip.  We figured that under the circumstances, an outdoor vacation where social distancing could still be maintained might be best.  We opted for the red rock country of southeastern Utah.

Tomorrow, we will travel to Moab, home of the iconic Delicate Arch, and numerous vistas at two national parks and several state ones.

An Earlier Moab Trip

The last time we were in Moab, it was just Leslie, Jamie and me together over seven years ago.  I pulled out some photos of that excursion to remember what we might consider doing this time around.  I had to laugh as I thumbed through them because Jamie looked grumpy in EVERY SINGLE SHOT.  What was up there??

I found some at Canyonlands where she was attracted to this sign at the main visitor center:

Island in the Sky Sign

At that time we went on this trip, she was fond of a kid’s book called “Hey, Al”.  In the story, the main character and his dog are taken to an island in the sky and she came to love that part – I think she still does.  I guess we’ll see if she takes the same interest in the sign when we get there this week.

Beautiful Red Rock Country

I am just going to include a few photos here from that original trip – southeastern Utah has some breathtaking red rock desert views that I love.  Below is a view looking through an arch you may hike to in Canyonlands.  We had Jamie’s jogger stroller to get there, but I THINK there were also some stairs.

I will write more on my next post about the Canyonlands area, since we plan on hitting it this time around too.  I know improvements are made to trails to make them accessible in National Parks, so hopefully this one is easier to get to, but I will have to let you know.

Also, on the trip we took with just Jamie, we rented a RZR vehicle and drove around some dirt roads and trails.  Yeah, we had to get Jamie into the back of the vehicle, but once in, we had her buckled in for a safe, fun ride.

Moab has a wide variety of off-road terrain, so if you are a novice to this type of driving like I was, easy trails and dirt roads are available to explore.   We drove out to this scenic overlook:

It was simply beautiful!  I am looking forward to this trip tomorrow and will write about our experiences and what activities are available to those traveling with a wheelchair in tow.
